In a city with thousands of water towers, Rachel Whiteread’s ornamental addition to Museum of Modern Art’s roof is absolutely perfect.
To see the Public Art Fund’s original location for the artwork, check this out.

Very cool! Nice use of Pinterest, a natural fit for art editions site 20x200. Could they be making better use of the gift category though?

The 20x200 Valentine’s Giveaway!
Being a few days away from Valentine’s Day, we can’t help but think about how much we love our collectors. To that end, we’re going to give away two $100 gift certificates!
Here’s what you need to do to win one of the gift certificates:
Create a Facebook photo album or Pinterest board and call it “A 20x200 Valentine”
Add to the album or board 8 items that would make great gifts for your significant other (at least 4 of the items must be 20x200 art)
Let us know about the album or board (send us the link, or post it on our wall)
We need to hear about your album or board by 2/13. On Valentine’s Day itself, we’ll announce the two winners on Facebook!
Good luck, and we’re looking forward to seeing your collections!

Jackson Pollock pissed people off. Then Warhol pissed off all the people that liked Jackson Pollock, which was even more exciting to me.

German newspaper replaces ALL photos with Ellsworth Kelly shapes!
(via Paul Smelzer)

The culture editor, Cornelius Tittel, convinced the newspaper to run Kelly shapes in place of all photographs. It’s genius, brave, and uncompromising. How do you convince a newspaper to swap the soccer image with an Ellsworth shape? Unbelievable and wonderful. This reminded me that I started as a designer to make incredible things, challenge others, and myself, not to make nice, listen to banal strategy, and trade remarkable for benign. There is a reason this blog is named burning settlers cabin, not the quiet settlers cabin. Light the house on fire. Fuck safe.

On a wall encircling the American University in Cairo’s downtown campus on Mohammed Mahmoud Street. Throughout clashes in Tahrir Square and surrounding streets, people on motorcycles have delivered wounded protesters to field hospitals for treatment.

This Tumblr translates and explains graffiti and other protest art found in Egypt. Cool! (h/t @zoeschlanger, @annie_werner)

This May, the New Museum will present an exhibition of four films by British artist Tacita Dean—the most substantial presentation of the artist’s work in New York to date. The presentation focuses on a group of recent works that capture important American artists of the last fifty years and features Merce Cunningham, Julie Mehretu, Claes Oldenburg, and Cy Twombly.

Merce Cunningham Performs STILLNESS… (2008), is a series of six films in which the avant-garde choreographer - portrayed in life size - dances to 4’33’’, the radical composition by John Cage that consists of four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence.

STILLNESS is completely striking and New Yorkers have been lucky enough to have it shown a few times locally in the past few years (Dia: Beacon’s basement galleries (‘08) and the Guggenheim’s Haunted show (‘09) come to mind. Don’t miss it this time around!

In the last couple years, I’ve done quite a few projects in corporate spaces, and I have been really surprised by the incredibly warm reception. I always assumed that the places that really needed beauty were the streets, but I’m starting to see the deep desire and need for more art in workplaces as well…

The paradox is that developing a clear, authentic voice doesn’t isolate the institution but infinitely expands its relevance in the life of the city and citizen. It is so clear what the organic supermarket Whole Foods stands for, so they don’t need to worry about just selling food. They sell clothing, books, classes, skin care, yoga supplies, which all relate to the core of who they are. Museums have had difficulty becoming more integral to people’s life because they lost sight of their core, which should be different for each museum. A museum concerned with integrating art into the life of young people might find it appropriate to open a dance club. A museum that believes that it is most suited to be a temple of art can be a truly meditative oasis in the heart of a bustling city. A museum that is committed to childhood education might find it relevant to open a charter school. Museums in suburban locations need to determine how they can integrate themselves into the leisure patterns of their own constituency. Museums shouldn’t change by looking elsewhere; they should change by looking more carefully at themselves. That’s too difficult a task to pass off to visitors.
