This May, the New Museum will present an exhibition of four films by British artist Tacita Dean—the most substantial presentation of the artist’s work in New York to date. The presentation focuses on a group of recent works that capture important American artists of the last fifty years and features Merce Cunningham, Julie Mehretu, Claes Oldenburg, and Cy Twombly.
Merce Cunningham Performs STILLNESS… (2008), is a series of six films in which the avant-garde choreographer - portrayed in life size - dances to 4’33’’, the radical composition by John Cage that consists of four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence.
STILLNESS is completely striking and New Yorkers have been lucky enough to have it shown a few times locally in the past few years (Dia: Beacon’s basement galleries (‘08) and the Guggenheim’s Haunted show (‘09) come to mind. Don’t miss it this time around!
