Ed Ruscha, Lawrence Weiner, Marilyn Minter, E.V. Day, Tony Conrad, Andy Goldsworthy and Tony Oursler, as well as musicians Jay-Z and Thom Yorke are just some of the artists on board with the aptly named Water Tank Project, an effort to increase public awareness of the need to conserve water.

There’s a call for artists too. Seems like a great opportunity for Artists on Tumblr to make their impact on the city’s architecture.

Though the full roster of artists is quite impressive, the project is not only open to established artists. The website has posted an open call to “all artists regardless of age, experience, sex, race, color, or national origin” and plans a school competition so some young artists will get the chance to express themselves across New York City’s skyline.

In Aspen Grotjahn will move beyond museum walls with a sculptural invasion spread across the four peaks of Snowmass Mountain.

A limited-edition ski pass bearing images of Grotjahn’s mask sculptures will sell from Aspen resorts this weekend, where skiers and riders can enjoy the public sculptures that have been erected around the mountain. Grotjahn’s ability to walk the line between representation and abstractions is something that really comes through in this sculptural series.
The work of the British-born Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE is preoccupied with the decline of empires, and in particular with Horatio Nelson, the figurehead of the British Empire at the height of its power. It was a delicious irony, then, when Shonibare was awarded the title of Member of the British Empire, in 2005, and he’s attached the honorific to his name ever since. Shonibare’s latest exhibition, “Addio del Passato,” which opens today at James Cohan Gallery, in Chelsea, dresses Lord Nelson in African wax prints and situates him in five famous death scenes from classical painting.

Being a few days away from Valentine’s Day, we can’t help but think about how much we love our collectors. To that end, we’re going to give away two $100 gift certificates!

Here’s what you need to do to win one of the gift certificates:

Create a Facebook photo album or Pinterest board and call it “A 20x200 Valentine”

Add to the album or board 8 items that would make great gifts for your significant other (at least 4 of the items must be 20x200 art)

Let us know about the album or board (send us the link, or post it on our wall)

We need to hear about your album or board by 2/13. On Valentine’s Day itself, we’ll announce the two winners on Facebook!

The culture editor, Cornelius Tittel, convinced the newspaper to run Kelly shapes in place of all photographs. It’s genius, brave, and uncompromising. How do you convince a newspaper to swap the soccer image with an Ellsworth shape? Unbelievable and wonderful. This reminded me that I started as a designer to make incredible things, challenge others, and myself, not to make nice, listen to banal strategy, and trade remarkable for benign. There is a reason this blog is named burning settlers cabin, not the quiet settlers cabin. Light the house on fire. Fuck safe.
